Giving in Action

“Global pandemic lockdowns inevitably impacted international scholars like me. As a scientist from the Philippines studying the coronavirus, I am thankful that fellowships and scholarships made it possible for me to pursue and finish my Ph.D. It is a gift I received, and I intend to give back the gift by serving my community.” – Dr. DJ Darwin Bandoy, DVM, Ph.D.

Leader in the Making

Madison Luker Class of 2024

UC Davis veterinary student Madison Luker found entrepreneurial success thanks to a trip that she almost didn’t take. In 2018, Luker (then an undergraduate at the Georgia Institute of Technology), participated in the Cornell Animal Health Hackathon, an interdisciplinary event that challenges students to create outside-the-box solutions to veterinary healthcare needs in a constrained time frame.

Veterinary Medical Center

The Future of Livestock Care

When the School of Veterinary Medicine first opened its doors in 1948, its sole purpose was to prepare students to meet the needs of the growing animal agriculture industry in California. By 1970, the school’s prominence in veterinary medicine was already being established throughout the country, as it opened the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), a world-class clinical facility rivaled by none in the Western United States.

Philanthropy at Work

An Attitude of Gratitude

Dr. Jay Kerr, DVM ’77, credits the rewarding experiences of his profession as giving him the inspiration to give back to his alma mater that made it all possible.

A Day in the Life

Leading with Heart

It was a typical morning at Woodland Veterinary Hospital (WVH). One of the first canine patients had defecated all over the floor of the main treatment room and Woodstock, the clinic cat, came sauntering through to see what all the fuss was about.

A Walk on the Wild Side

From nearly having his arm swallowed by a 30-foot Burmese python named Samantha, to being in an operating room with a silverback gorilla who woke up early from anesthesia, Dean Mark Stetter enjoys walking on the wild side.

Residents Create Global Impact

UC Davis takes pride in training residents, interns, and fellows through the nation’s largest veterinary house officer program. Earlier this year, corporate and private donations enabled the school to expand that program with four new positions, bringing the total to 127 house officers in 39 advanced training disciplines.

This advanced training program allows veterinarians to become board-certified in a specialty field and routinely attracts candidates from all corners of the globe.
